Roman McConn, a 13-year-old who is passionate about dogs, has vowed to find a loving home for every shelter dog in the United States.
Since he was a young child, Roman McConn from Texas has been an avid dog lover. In 2015, when he was only three years old, Roman visited a local PetSmart and wondered why dogs were lined up in small cages outside the store.
According to the Washington Post, when he asked his parents, they clarified they were up for adoption, and if not adopted, they might be sent to heaven.
Roman’s young mind went numb, and so he made it his life’s mission to help as many shelter dogs as possible find adoptive homes.
With this noble cause in mind, Roman began creating fun and playful videos of the little pooches to draw attention to them.
However, these videos are not of the dogs with the most adorable looks or impressive talents, rather he chooses to highlight the underdogs, the ones who have been in the shelter the longest and have the saddest stories.
His mom shares these videos on their Instagram account, which has garnered a following of over 70,000 people.
Roman’s efforts were soon recognized, and by the age of 8, he was hosting a YouTube show with the Dodo Kids Network focused on animal rescues.
Soon, McConn and his mom, Jen, formed a nonprofit organization called Project Freedom Ride, to transport dogs from high-kill states like Texas and Georgia to northern states with higher adoption rates.
The young wonder says he gets to do all the fun stuff, like making videos and playing with the dogs, while his mom handles the tedious tasks, such as paperwork and computer work.
Roman believes all dogs deserve a good life, which is why he currently has 10 dogs at home—seven of them are his family pets, while three are fosters.
In 2018, the ASPCA recognized his humanitarian efforts and awarded him with the Kid of the Year award, and he was also invited to The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
In 2022, Disney+ took notice of him and offered him his own TV show called Roman to the Rescue, where he profiles dogs in need of adoption.
Roman’s visibility and recognition have been important for their nonprofit, Project Freedom Ride, which relies on donations and sponsorships to survive and thrive.
Despite his best efforts, some dogs are still put down, but he has toughened up over time and continues to focus on saving as many pups as he can.
The selfless boy is not interested in fame; instead, he hopes to use his recognition to help more dogs in the process.
He believes that every kid can make a difference by visiting local animal shelters to provide essential donations, walking the dogs, or even creating videos to help with their adoption.
