A little girl donated her lemonade stand money to a local animal shelter and it created a donation ripple effect.
A young girl with a big heart did something worthwhile and generous for an animal shelter. The Kent County Animal Shelter from Grand Rapids, Michigan, recently shared a heartwarming post on their Facebook page.
They posted a handwritten letter sent by a young girl called Abby, who donated $160 to the shelter, out of which she had raised $80 from a lemonade stand. Her parents matched her donation, and together they sent the shelter a check for $160.

Instead of keeping the money for herself, this kind soul decided to donate it to help the animals at the shelter. The note read, “Dear Kent County Animal Shelter, I had a lemonade stand and (earned) $80 plus some change, and my parents (matched) it. So, over $160 are going to the (animals). Maybe you can buy a toy or something for them. Sincerely, Abby.”
The shelter shared the post, stating, “We received a special donation today. This wonderful little girl sold lemonade to raise money for the shelter. Thank you to Abby and her family for this gift!”
The child’s innocence touched many hearts, and the post went viral, garnering over 4,500 likes and 1,500 shares. People began matching little Abby’s donation, and many sent goodies, toys, and boxes of treats for the animals.
As of now, the shelter has received more than $3,000 in donations, plus gifts from people across the country. According to Kent County Animal Shelter Director Angela Hollinshead, they typically receive donations when someone adopts an animal or during the holidays.
However, this generous and unexpected donation, coming from such a young child, was truly special and deeply moved them.
Hollinshead told Michigan Live, “We often say kindness is contagious, and in this instance, it has never been more true.” She also stated that, due to Abby’s small act of kindness, the shelter has received three times their regular monthly donations.
Although Hollinshead and the team have no idea who Abby or her parents are, she hopes they realize the wonderful chain reaction their donation has created. The shelter has also shared more posts of gift box donations with toys and treats for the animals by several people, citing Abby’s sweet note.
Hollinshead clarified that the donations are used for out-of-budget items, such as treats, extra toys, or sometimes for emergency medical funds to treat injured animals at the shelter.
