Dr Carl Allamby gave up his successful career as a Cleveland auto mechanic to pursue his lifelong passion of becoming a doctor.
A young boy, Carl Allamby from East Cleveland, Ohio, had a difficult childhood that was riddled with financial constraints.
In a family of five kids, there were often times, when the Allambys’ were left even without the basics like water, lights, and gas. For most of his childhood, he recalls, the family survived on welfare schemes run by the government.

Allamby told Fox News, that since a very young age, he had a strong desire to become a doctor and heal people. Despite having a great family with siblings who supported each other, he was unable to fulfill his wish of becoming a doctor owing to life’s pressures and circumstances.
As a young teen focused on survival and basic needs, he started working at a local car parts store while learning to repair and maintain cars.
By taking on various side jobs, he managed to cover his expenses and did his best in the situation. At just 19, he opened his shop, Allamby’s Auto Service, which quickly became a popular car repair service in town.
After successfully running his business for 15 years, he decided at age 34 to pursue a business degree from Ursuline College in Pepper Pike. However, he was required to study a course in biology to complete his business graduation.
As he began learning the basics of human physiology, his childhood dream of becoming a doctor resurfaced. He then enrolled in pre-med classes at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland to pursue his childhood passion.
Along with the classes, he started doing voluntary work at a nearby hospital, which gave him further experience in the medical field. He was fascinated by how things worked and found the human body to be one of the most complex systems, which sparked his keen interest in medicine.
Later, he was accepted into Cleveland State University and spent nearly five years taking evening, morning, and weekend classes while managing his business, lifestyle, and family responsibilities.
He could not leave his business abruptly, because too many people depended on him and he had bills to pay. He told Fox News, his wife supported him throughout his nine-year journey of studying medicine.
In 2015, he finally began medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University. At age 51, in 2022, Dr Carl Allamby joined the emergency room team at Cleveland Clinic’s Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, as a physician.
As a 53-year-old doctor, he now provides complete care for every aspect of the body, from birth to the end of life. His previous experience in car repair provided him with the skills and compassion necessary for working with patients.
He finds great joy in fixing cars and healing people, as both allow him to connect with and serve his community in the best possible ways. Dr. Allamby’s story proves that passion can be pursued at any age—the only requirement is that the fire within continues to burn.
