Bear’s Story 

Bear is a 12-year-old German Shepherd and a former Sussex Police Force canine. Adopted by Julia Pope and Ian, a retired police officer couple.

A Special Celebration 

On Bear’s 12th birthday, Julia and Ian took him for a walk in the South Downs.  It was his first walk after surgery to remove two tumors.

A Heroic Discovery 

Bear, recovering and retired, hadn’t forgotten his instincts. He led his owners to a bush where a cold, wet, and helpless man was trapped.

The Rescue 

The man was unable to move and disoriented. Thanks  to Bear’s discovery, police quickly rescued him.

A Special Moment 

Bear’s former handler, Iain Sutherland, attended the award ceremony. Julia said it was “amazing and completely unexpected.”
